Suicide Bomber Kills 2 Police, 4 Civilians In Yobe

Two highway policemen and four passengers have been killed by a suicide bomber at police checkpoint in Damaturu, Yobe State.

The bomb blast seemed to have targeted the police checkpoint few metres to the military checkpoint where police usually stop and search vehicles coming from Maiduguri before it enter Yobe State capital.

Eye witnesses said that the police highway patrol team was searching vehicles just outside the city and an SUV with a foreign number plate, arrived at the spot killing the policemen and some passengers.

Confirming the incident, the state police spokesman, Toyin Gbadegesin said that eight people including the two suicide bombers were killed in the explosion. Two policemen were among the victims.

“The police were uncomfortable, so they decided to search the vehicle. While the search was going on, another SUV arrived. It was stopped for the same search.

“There was a man and a woman in the second car. Suddenly, there was a blast from inside the car while two policemen were trying to conduct a search,” Gbadegesin said.

“A handbag belonging to the woman in the car was found and some explosives were recovered and defused,” he added.

It was not immediately clear whether the checkpoint was the target but Boko Haram have hit police stop and search points in the past.
