90-Year-Old Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah Worth Over $18bn is Dead, After Months in Hospital With Pneumonia


King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia died in hospital tonight at the age of 90, after battling pneumonia. The monarch, thought to be worth $18bn has ruled oil-rich Saudi Arabia since 2005, but has been absent from public events in recent months due to his ill health.

King Abdullah’s half-brother Salman has become king, a statement attributed to Salman said. A statement released by the new king read:


‘His Highness Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and all members of the family and the nation mourn the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who passed away at exactly 1am this morning.'
Abdullah will be buried today following Muslim tradition that a burial should take place within 24 hours of death.
