The Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigeria Police Force on Thursday stated that it had foiled an attempted terrorist attack on Itu Head Bridge.
Itu Bridge provides the only link between Akwa Ibom and Cross River States in the South-South Nigeria.
Briefing newsmen at the Police Headquarters, the State Commissioner of Police, Gaibrel Achong, said the Command was able to stop the deadly attack on the all important Bridge as a result of information received from good Nigerians on September 20, 2014 that a group of aggrieved militants planned to blow up the bridge.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Gaibrel Achong who briefed the Press at the Force Headquarters at Ikot Akpanabia, Uyo said the Command was able to stop the deadly attack on the all important Bridge as a result of information received from good Nigerians on September 20, 2014 that a group of aggrieved militants planned to blow up the bridge.
Achong said upon receipt of the information, his men swung into action and on October 5, 2014, operatives from the command arrested two suspects: Samuel Coleman Yaw ‘m’, a Ghanaian resident in Bakassi, Cross River State and Monday Anthony ‘m’ of Ikang Village, Bakassi LGA, Cross River State.
The police chief said the mastermind, Boronyefa Olorogun alias General Bofa, escaped but after a thorough and rigorous search by a combined team of Police and Department of State Security (DSS) Akwa Ibom State Command, traced General Bofa to Yenagoa in Bayelsa State where he was arrested on October 17, 2014.
The following items, according to the CP Achong, were recovered from the suspects: 6 (super power 90) Explosives, 5 Blasting Laps, 3 Rolls of detonating cords, 1 Bundle of extra detonating, 1 Honda Accord 1997 model. He said the suspects will soon the charged to court. Other items include 2 big boat machines, rocket launchers as well as other items.
The command also paraded 24 suspects for kidnapping and armed robbery.
