Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu Joins Governorship Race

The leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other major stakeholders of the party from the three geo-political zones in Ebonyi State have adopted Nigeria’s Health Minister, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, as its consensus governorship candidate ahead 2015 general election.
The adoption of the health minister was made known on October 7, 2014, Tuesday, by the party’s leadership after a closed-door stakeholder’s meeting of Ebonyi North and Central senatorial zones, Leadership reports.

It was also reported that the meeting which lasted for over two hours was convened by the leader of the party, Governor Martin Elechi, at the Government House, Abakaliki.
Meanwhile, Prof. Chukwu’s endorsement is expected to lay to rest rumours of a possible consensus candidate of the party in next year’s election.

Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, who is a serving Minister of Health of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, was the former Chief Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (2003–2008). In the year 2007, he was appointed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Ebonyi State University Abakaliki and visiting Professor of Surgery at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus in 2010.

Prof. Chukwu trained as a medical doctor at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos in 1986, while he obtained his post-graduate qualification in orthopaedic surgery from the West African Postgraduate of Medical College.

It would be recalled that it was the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, who recently announced that Nigeria was completely free of active Ebola cases.
Meanwhile, Enugu State Governor Sullivan Chime has explained how democratic principles work in his state through consensus candidacy.
